Art Walk in San José del Cabo - Thursday nights November to June

In Baja México behind San Jose del Cabo's historic main square and church lies the ever-growing Art District, which in recent years has become the cultural center of Los Cabos with many high-end fine art galleries displaying original paintings, sculpture, photography, prints and jewelry by local, national and international contemporary artists. Among these art galleries are shops housing the works by the top folk artists and artisans of Cabo & Mexico. Along with an abundance of galleries, the Art District is home to some of the area’s top restaurants.

Art Walk in San José is a popular weekly event. Every Thursday evening between the months of November and June, the galleries welcome guests to enjoy an evening strolling the neighborhood, viewing art, sipping wine and dining at the fabulous neighborhood restaurants. All who participate are open from 5pm-9pm and often certain galleries will have special events such as "artist in attendance" or openings of new work. It is a great night to come downtown and enjoy what the district has to offer.

Known for Its Scenic Beauty, Great Golf and Fishing, Los Cabos is Also a Mecca for Great Eating.

Los Cabos attracts people from all over the world because of all the wonderful things is has going for it – great weather, scenic beauty, the best fishing and golf and the warm hospitality of the people who live here.

What it also has is plenty of great food.  It turns out the climate and conditions throughout southern Baja are perfect for organic farming a large part of the year, and there’s also a rich marine environment from the Sea of Cortez up to Magdalena Bay that provides a wide variety of fresh seafood – lobster, shrimp, scallops, clams and fish – to the many creative restaurants in the area.

When it comes to fresh organic products, it’s hard to beat the many farms around the Miraflores/Santiago area and places like Flora Farm and Huerta Los Tamarindos. Run by Patrick and Gloria Greene, Flora Farm near San Jose del Cabo is part of a culinary complex that includes manicured fields of organic produce, a restaurant and bar, a grocery and even culinary cottages for onsite stays.  In its variety of efforts, Flora Farm has been one of the key players in promoting the field-to-fork concept locally.  Huerta Los Tamarindos, just outside San Jose del Cabo, is a certified organic farm and restaurant started by Chef Enrique Silva of Tequila restaurant. While providing the freshest tomatoes, eggplant, chiles, zucchini, baby lettuces and herbs to local markets, Silva also runs a cooking school on the grounds so that guests can learn about the farming experience and then take those ingredients from the ground to the outdoor kitchen and create pre-Hispanic, traditional Mexican or Mediterranean dishes, like pumpkin soup, stuffed squid or vegetarian lasagna.

For many of us, dining in Los Cabos means a table with a view of the Sea of Cortez. As you sit there taking in the scenery it just seems natural to want to enjoy a seafood dish with ingredients that were probably taken from the waters directly in front of you. It may be something simple, like the classic Baja fish or shrimp tacos, a more sophisticated dish like a smoked marlin tostada, or an exotic specialty like chocolate clams or pulpo (octopus). The delicious cuisine derived from the Sea of Cortez and Pacific Ocean is one of the great luxuries of the area, and the best chefs continue to create dishes using seafood in ways that surprise and delight.

Drew Deckman of Deckman’s restaurant near San Jose has earned a reputation as a wildly creative chef, using exotic and locally-available ingredients like geoduck, gooseneck barnacles and sea urchin. “It’s all about honoring the wonderful array of ingredients available here in Baja,” he says. Deckman also offers cooking classes at his restaurant, which use fresh seafood and sometimes wild boar and venison, and makes wine pairing an essential part of the experience.

Many of the most famous resorts have also been quick to take advantage of the thriving local markets, including Jean-George Vongerichten at One & Only Palmilla and Fabrice Guisset at Los Ventanas al Paraiso, who also have their own organic gardens on the hotel grounds, and Angel Carbajal of Nik San who adds savory Mexican accents to his wonderfully fresh sushi. Up in Todos Santos, Chef Dany Lamote of Hotel California, has produced several tantalizing cookbooks (including The Hotel California Tequila Cookbook) and, in partnership with Todo Santos Eco Adventures, also offers cooking classes designed to expose visitors to the delicious regional cuisine. Attendees get information on local products, flora and seafood (including things like wild honey gathered from nearby caves) and then spend an evening preparing authentic regional dishes. And, yes, an essential part of that education includes a sampling of the best Mexican wine, beer and tequila.

With its variety of culinary experiences from quick and casual to more sophisticated dining, southern Baja’s award-winning chefs continue to offer uniquely creative dishes based on the fresh products that local organic farmers and fisherman provide.  Whether it’s fish tacos at a street stand, dining under umbrellas on the beach or a visit to one of the 5-star restaurants in the area, it’s good to know that eating well is always going to be one of the key attractions in southern Baja.

Los Cabos Carnival 2013 February 14 - 17 Cabo San Lucas México

The word "Carnival" refers to the numerous festivities that occur in many Catholic cities every year prior to the Lenten season. These festivals often last several days or weeks and are widely popular celebrations of local history and culture. Residents and visitors prepare for Carnival festivities throughout the year. Revelers both young and old can enjoy numerous organized activities or party in the city streets with their families, friends, community members, and strangers.
Beauty Queen contest participant.

Religious and Historical Significance of Carnival:
Lent is the Catholic season that represents the forty days prior to Jesus' death on Good Friday and his resurrection on Easter Sunday. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, which usually falls in February. On certain days of Lent, Catholics are supposed to abstain from eating meat as a physical and spiritual reminder of Jesus' sacrifices. The word "Carnival" likely originates from the Latin term "carne levare," or "to remove meat." On the day before Ash Wednesday (Mardi Gras or "Fat Tuesday,") many Catholics ate all of the meat and fat in their homes, and held large parties in the streets as one last celebration before the penitential Lenten season. It is a time when all social classes could disguise themselves, congregate, and forget their usual tribulations. Carnival originated in largely Catholic Southern Europe and spread to the Americas during the age of exploration and colonization.

Happiness is what carnivals are all about.

Carnival Traditions, Similar and Distinctive:
All places that celebrate Carnival have generally the same activities, but each Carnival is infused with elements of local culture. During both and night, revelers in the streets listen to music and dance, eat, and drink. Many cities hold balls and masquerades. The main tradition of Carnival includes parades through the city streets. Many cities hold parades with floats, which are enormous, decorated vehicles that ca
n carry dozens of riders, who often wear very elaborate, colorful costumes and masks. Parades usually have themes, which often parody current local political and social problems.

We'd like to invite you to join the 3 day celebration in Cabo San Lucas, starting this Feb 14. Get to know another side of mexican cultue, the party side!

Schedule for the celebration.

How to cure a hungover in Los Cabos // Bloody Mary Recipe

Step 1: Ingredients

• 2oz vodka of your choice
• 8oz spicy tomato juice
• 2oz Bloody Mary mix
• olives
• Tabasco Sauce, Worcestershire sauce
• Celery Salt
• Ice
• Cracked black pepper
• Hot ‘n’ Spicy Pickles
• Martini Shaker
• Pub Glass

Step 2: Mixing

One:  fill shaker with ice, the amount of ice varies with how many drinks you will be mixing and how much ice you enjoy in your drinks.

Two: Add in 8oz of spicy tomato juice along with 2oz of Bloody Mary mix. When it comes to Bloody Mary mix it does not matter what brand you use, just try as many as it takes to find the one that you like best.

Three: Add 1oz Tabasco Sauce and two dashes of Worcestershire sauce, you can add more or less Tabasco it just depends on how spicy you want your drink to be, you can also leave the Tabasco out if you do not like spicy, the drink will be the same either way.

Four: Add in Franks hot sauce, along with cracked black pepper. When it comes to adding these ingredients I always say to add as much as needed to meet your taste.

Five: Add in celery salt, any brand of celery salt will do. The reason that celery salt is so important is that it helps take some of the bite away from the hot sauce and Tabasco sauce. It is also essential when it comes to the flavor and fullness of the drink.

Step 3: Pouring and Garnishing

One: Once you have all of these ingredients added in the shaker, close the shaker and shake it as long as needed to mix all of the ingredients and to chill the drink to perfect serving temperature.

Two: When your drink is chilled and ready to serve remove lid and let stand. While you are letting your drink stand take your tall pub glass and apply a small amount of celery salt around the rim of the glass that way you will taste celery while you drink. When you have the salt around the top of the glass, pour your Bloody Mary into the glass.

Three: Once in the glass it is time to add the garnishes to drink, when garnishing the drink it is all about the appearance. For garnishing you should use zesty pickles and olives. I usually insert a toothpick into the olives so that they stay on top of the drink so the drinker can enjoy them while drinking the Bloody. For the pickle I just insert a wedge into the glass so it stands straight up in the glass.
